Early Years

at Ilm Day Nursery

Building Strong Foundations for Lifelong Learning

At Ilm Day Nursery, we believe the early years are one of the most important stages in a child’s life. These first experiences help shape confidence, communication, independence, and a love for learning that continues as children grow.

Our approach is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), the statutory framework for early education and childcare in England for children from birth to age 5. It supports children’s learning, development, health, safety, and readiness for school.

Our Early Years Approach

We create warm, stimulating, and child-centred learning environments where children are encouraged to:

  • Explore through play
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Develop communication and social skills
  • Express creativity and imagination
  • Learn at a pace that reflects their individual needs

Through planned activities, free play, meaningful interactions, and supportive routines, our team helps every child enjoy a positive and enriching nursery journey.

The EYFS Framework

The EYFS Framework outlines seven areas of learning and development that guide children’s early education.
These areas help practitioners plan experiences that are age-appropriate, engaging, and supportive of each child’s progress.

These areas are especially important in the earliest stages of development and provide the foundation for future learning.

Communication and Language
We support children in developing listening, understanding, vocabulary, and confidence in expressing their thoughts and needs.

Physical Development
Children are encouraged to build coordination, movement, balance, and self-care skills through active indoor and outdoor play.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We help children form positive relationships, understand their feelings, build self-confidence, and develop independence.

As children grow, the prime areas support their progress across four additional areas of learning.

Literacy
We introduce stories, songs, mark-making, early reading, and language-rich experiences that nurture a love for books and communication.

Mathematics
Children explore numbers, shapes, patterns, comparison, and early problem-solving through playful everyday activities.

Understanding the World
We encourage curiosity about people, places, nature, technology, and the wider world around them.

Expressive Arts and Design
Children develop imagination and self-expression through painting, music, role play, movement, crafts, and creative exploration.
